ANDREA JENKYNS
Andrea calls for ban on Trophy Hunting
Andrea Jenkyns MP has signed Early Day Motion 1829 and a public letter to ban trophy hunting. Every year, UK trophy hunters are quietly bringing back in the country hundreds of trophies from the world’s most endangered animals. This includes 2 tonnes of elephant tusks, hippos, bears, baboons, leopards, zebras, lions and many other species on the brink of extinction. Andrea has asked the Government to deliver on the promises made in 2015 and for the UK to be on the front line for bringing a global ban. She has signed a letter along with colleagues and fellow animal lovers such as Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Stephen Fry, Chris Packham and Ricky Gervais to ask the President of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi, to restore the ban on trophy hunting. The ban was introduced in 2014 because the local elephant population was decimated, but recently the Parliament of Botswana has voted to lift the ban. Andrea has asked President Masisi, who is conducting a public consultation, to protect this magnificent creature and bring back the ban.
A petition, launched by the Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting, has collected almost a quarter of a million signatures asking to ban this abhorrent practice. You can find the petition at the following link.
The Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting calls for:
- Governments to ban trophy hunting and the import and export of hunting trophies
- Effective enforcement of existing national and international laws against trophy hunting, with tough penalties for offenders
- An immediate halt to the trade in trophies of vulnerable, threatened or endangered species
- Trophy hunting exemptions to be removed from existing international conservation agreements
- Negotiations to commence on a comprehensive global agreement banning trophy hunting
Andrea said: “Trophy hunting is a gruesome, immoral and abhorrent practice, with innocent and beautiful animals killed as a cruel entertainment. As an animal lover, I cannot accept this and I have signed EDM 1829 and a letter to President Masisi. It’s time for a global ban, and to put a stop to trophy imports into the UK.”
