In January, I sent the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Michael Gove a letter to support the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home campaign to increase the maximum custodial sentence for the most serious acts of animal cruelty to five years imprisonment. As a passionate advocate for animal rights I am pleased that the Government is taking a great number of steps forward in this area, and I am very happy that the Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs has said that the legislation needed to increase sentences for animal cruelty will be introduced at the earliest opportunity.
