Today I held a round table event on the subject of debt management, money skills, and financial advice with a wide range of stakeholders including local DWP teams, Citizens Advice leaders, and money management charities such as 'Turn2Us' and 'The Money Charity'.
We held an insightful discussion and I was interested to hear more about how the pandemic has impacted the services available, and the demand in our community. I know from my discussions with residents, and my email inbox, how tough things can be and also how debt management can impact on mental health issues. I always try to assist wherever I can.
We also discussed the importance of money and life skills in education, to help young people learn how to manage their money properly going forward. I think the charities working on this area are doing great work.
I completely understand in these uncertain times how difficult these issues can be, and it is vital we tackle the stigma around debt and money issues, financial health checks are an important part of life and can help to source issues before they become all encompassing.
I am keen to continue to bring services together to create a closer working environment amongst stakeholders to help residents gain access to key support when they need it.
