Today in Parliament I asked the Secretary of State for Justice, the Rt Hon Robert Buckland MP, about crimes related to domestic abuse. It is vital that we as a society tackle this important issue and I was shocked to hear that one in six crimes in West Yorkshire are linked to domestic abuse.
My full question:
"One in six crimes in West Yorkshire is linked to Domestic Abuse.
Lifting of lockdown restrictions, may lead to an increase in reporting of this type of crimes.
What plans are in place to enable the courts to deal with an increase in cases?"
I am pleased that the minister outlined that courts are able to prioritise cases by their seriousness, including domestic abuse, and that the Governments plan for the courts as we lift lockdown restrictions includes priority for domestic abuse cases. I hope this will help to keep people safe as we go forward.
