Residents have contacted me recently raising their opposition to the establishment of a permanent travellers site in the Carr Gate area, which would mean the removal of greenbelt land in order to set up such a site.
Wakefield Council is preparing a new statutory local plan for the district and seeking to allocate land to make provision for Traveller accommodation. A number of privately owned sites currently occupied by Travellers, including on Lawns Lane, have been identified in the draft local plan as sites contributing to meeting identified needs. To provide certainty about the use of such sites for Traveller accommodation, where the sites are located in the Green Belt, it is proposed to remove the land from the Green Belt.
The latest version of the draft plan, known as the Publication Draft Local Plan 2036, is currently available for consultation between 29 October 2020 and 31 December 2020.
